Monday Musings 12/21/15 Through the eyes of a kid

With the holiday season upon us, I’m still saying “where has the time gone?” I can’t believe it’s the end of the year already. It’s going so fast, the days just seem to mesh one right into the next.

As I walked into the coffee shop this morning, I was telling the barista that there just aren’t enough hours in the day. I still have a ton of Christmas shopping to do, trying to buy thoughtful, yet needed gifts for those in my life, even the ones who proclaim they don’t need or want anything. That is basically every adult.  What do you buy the person who will buy themselves whatever they want? I know I’m guilty of it as well. People ask what it is I want, and I always say I don’t want or need anything. I guess I can’t complain about them if I do it too.

Then there are the kids. Trying to think of what to buy them, well they also have pretty much everything I can think of. Too many toys, who really wants more clothes, another Lego set,  video game, or gift card. You get the point.

I am not one to go overboard when it comes to gifts, I feel the thought that goes into them are what really matters most. Thankfully the people that are in my life feel exactly the same way. But I’ve been at a loss lately. I think the holidays have crept up on me so fast that the time is of the essence. Yep I’ve got 4 days. Eeek. Ok maybe I need to get off the computer and get my butt out shopping. But who wants to deal with the crazy crowds at the stores. I’ve been to the mall, I’ve been to the local mom & pop stores, and the crowds are outrageous. I really should have done online shopping.

But at the end of the day, or should I say the end of this past Saturday, it all really came into perspective. Dave and I had, J his oldest son over for the weekend and while we were cooking dinner the firetruck whistles were going off like crazy. Not their normal rushing to a fire whistles, but a different tune.

It could only mean one thing.

“Hurry up, J get your socks and shoes on and get your butt downstairs now!!”

“What’s going on, Dad?”

“Don’t worry, just get down here, now!”

The sound of feet hitting the ground above my head, the rustling of clothes and closet doors, and the ensuing thudding as J rushed down the stairs. By the time I got to the front door, which only took a mere minute, Dave had our coats in his hand and J was at the bottom of the stairs.

“It’s him isn’t it, Dad?”

“Yep, it is”

Sirens blasting, lights flashing, and the big ol’ jolly man himself rode in on his sleigh. We had given, J those light up glow sticks and he was waving them wildly on the front porch. We watched from a distance because it was actually snowing little flurries and it was windy as all heck. We didn’t dare head to the street, but that didn’t stop one of Santa’s firefighter elves from walking across the grass to give, J a few candy canes. The look on his face was priceless. Not for the candy canes but for the simple joy in seeing Santa ride by, and this conversation…

“Miss. Pau-la-la, this is your first time seeing Santa like this! ”

“Nope, J my fire department does the same thing. I remember seeing him like this when I was your age.”

“No I mean, this is your first time here at dad’s house seeing Santa, so it’s your first time.”

” You are right about that, J.”

“It’s a great memory to make, the first time seeing Santa here with dad and I, isn’t it?”

“Yes it is, J. Yes it is!”

Making memories, the simple moments in time, laughing, freezing, catching snowflakes on your tongue, enjoying the experiences , and seeing them for the “first time” all over again.

I’m loving all these first times
